Crediton

The busy town of Crediton, known both historically and locally as Kirton, has been a market town since the Doomsday records were written. An often-quoted poem states that "Kirton was a market town when Exeter was a furzy down" ('furzy down' being gorse heathland). Unlike many rural towns surrounding cities in Devon, Crediton has retained a thriving economy due to a diverse and wide range of businesses resident in the town, ranging from sportscar manufacturers to a chicken processing plant. Crediton also has a lively and active community, which supports the large number of churches, schools, arts and crafts activities, sports facilities, parks and recreational areas. Crediton's largest church, The Church of the Holy Cross was originally a cathedral before Exeter Cathedral was built, and Crediton still retains its own bishop to this day.
