Having used TomTom navigator on a PocketPC for about a year with several intermittent problems (caused by GPS receiver conflicts), I took the plunge and got a TomTom One all in one system from Amazon.co.uk.

Comes supplied with all you need to get up and running in minutes. The hardest part of getting it all up and running was deciding where to stick the mount on my windscreen! This unit is so simple to use. If you've used satnav products before it will be a breeze, if not, then it will still be a breeze as there are step by step on screen guides to help out.

The gps acquires signal in superfast time - just switching the unit on outdoors and looking at the screen had my position displayed instantly - brilliant.

Using the unit itself has been straightforward - just tap in the postcode or address of where you want to go and up pops a route for you - you can select fastest, shortest, avoiding motorways, walking routes etc

Having known just how useful these gadgets are, I'm still amazed at what they can do. That said, I still keep a road atlas in the boot just in case the technology lets medown and I'm heading to somewhere for the first time. However, I get the feeling that the road atlas will be STAYING in the boot for some time to come yet!

Haven't got round to trying the software on the supplied cd yet so can't comment on that at the moment.

You can easily create you own POI's (Points of Interest) for your maps - friends and family addresses etc and if you have already got some in the TomTom .ov2 format, you can copy them across to the SD map memory card for viewing and use on your unit.

Didn't miss not having a main charger as the unit is supplied with a car charger which is all you need really. Just leave the unit on charge while you drive.

In summary: PROS - Simple and quick to set up, reliable, user friendly menus. CONS - No protective case supplied which is a shame, though you can get inexpensive compatible camera-type cases elsewhere.

Finally - MAKE SURE THAT YOU REMOVE THE UNIT FROM YOUR CAR WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT YOUR DESTINATION - so many of these units are being stolen these days, you'll be lost (literally) without yours. It is also a good idea to remove the windscreen mount and hide that so thieves won't even think you've got a satnav unit in the first place. It would be good if TomTom could come up with some kind of PIN security for the unit as a form of basic protection.

A TRULY AMAZING PRODUCT

Having just secured a new job which takes me from the confines of the office to the outside world, I decided that I wasn't going to risk using the tea-stained, dog-chewed, 1998 AA map with curling edges that has languished somewhere on the back seat for the last few years and make an investment.

After returning home with this item I was initially wary, due to never using a Sat Nav before but these fears were unfounded. The device is incredibly simple to set up with the first lock being found in under 60 seconds flat. From there, I have had no problems going from postcode to postcode or locating points of interest and more importantly Petrol stations.

I have yet to register with TomTom plus due to the fact that my mobile (Motorola Pebl) isn't on the compatible phone list (yet), all being well the list will be expanded in due course.

Naturally as these products age they are going to drop down in price, but even at this moderate expense it represents amazing value for money and should be avoided at your risk.
