Clovelly

I lived in Westward Ho! a decade ago, Clovelly USED to be a very pretty little village indeed, where sympathetically painted cottages laced with baskets and troughs of beautifully coloured and aromatic flowers lined either side of the cobbled hill. Many times we'd visit the New Inn for a glass of real ale and a lovely meal. The people in the village were very friendly, some lived to 105yo. The car park at the top of the village was just a piece of ground, but had a 'character' about it, even if a little uneven in places. Try and imagine my horror when we visited Clovelly only to find that some 'person' had made them build a great big concrete monstrosity at the top to enable them to charge people for visiting. Whoever passed this 'plan' mustv been down the New Inn and had quite a lot too many. It absolutely broke my heart when I saw it, it was horrific to see such a lovely place turn with a building such as this. We never did go back. I've now moved away, but if I ever went back to Devon, it would be to find someone who remembers it for what it was and definitely not for what it has become!
