Being Devon locals, it\u2019s usually Exeter that wins the day simply because it\u2019s that bit closer. Not that we\u2019re starting a city rivalry here\u2026 but if you had to choose, are you team Exeter or team Plymouth? (Careful now, that one could get controversial!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this occasion though, Plymouth had a very specific draw \u2014 the fantastic <strong>Beryl Cook exhibition at The Box<\/strong>. That, combined with the brilliant <strong>Beryl Cook sculpture trail<\/strong>, gave us the perfect excuse to turn the visit into a full circular walk through the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And honestly? It\u2019s a great way to kick things off: everyday life, colour, and character right in the middle of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, we headed down <strong>Raleigh Street<\/strong>, weaving towards the Theatre Royal and crossing over Royal Parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just behind the theatre, tucked near The Bank pub, we found the second sculpture \u2014 <em>Ruby Venezuela<\/em>. This stretch already starts to feel like a little hidden corridor of culture once you know what you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We then continued via <strong>Derry\u2019s Cross, Athenaeum Lane, Athenaeum Street and Citadel Road<\/strong>, passing right through the city\u2019s layers of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little side note here \u2014 if you\u2019re into local curiosities, keep an eye out around Alfred Street where Beryl Cook once ran a guest house nearby. Easy to miss, but a nice little detail for fans of her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hoe: views, wind, and a fish &amp; chip temptation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From here the walk naturally drifts towards one of Plymouth\u2019s most iconic spaces \u2014 <strong>The Hoe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-the-hoe-smeatons-tower.webp\" alt=\"Smeaton\u2019s Tower lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe during a circular walk in Devon\" class=\"wp-image-433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-the-hoe-smeatons-tower.webp 1000w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-the-hoe-smeatons-tower-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-the-hoe-smeatons-tower-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-the-hoe-smeatons-tower-405x270.webp 405w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Smeaton\u2019s Tower overlooking a very windy Plymouth Hoe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the way, you pass The Hoe public bowling green where you\u2019ll find the third sculpture \u2014 <em>Bowler<\/em> \u2014 standing right by the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then suddenly the city opens up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re on the Hoe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Smeaton\u2019s Tower<\/strong> stands proudly on the left, the wind usually doing its best impression of a coastal storm (Plymouth never does \u201cgentle breeze\u201d particularly well).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We followed the promenade down towards Hoe Road where the fourth sculpture appears \u2014 <em>Hips &amp; Chips<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, this one is dangerous if you\u2019re hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s almost impossible not to start thinking about fish and chips looking out over Plymouth Sound. We may or may not have paused for a break here\u2026 purely for research purposes, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barbican finish for the sculpture trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u279c <em>From the Citadel towards the Barbican<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-citadel-barbican-port-approach.webp\" alt=\"Approaching the Barbican from Plymouth Citadel with views towards the harbour entrance on a circular walk\" class=\"wp-image-434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-citadel-barbican-port-approach.webp 1000w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-citadel-barbican-port-approach-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-citadel-barbican-port-approach-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-citadel-barbican-port-approach-405x270.webp 405w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From the Citadel, the walk opens up towards the Barbican and harbour entrance \u2014 one of the most atmospheric stretches of the route.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Hoe, we made our way along <strong>Hoe Road, past Tinside Lido<\/strong>, then around <strong>Madeira Road and the Royal Citadel<\/strong>, heading down into the historic Barbican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the final sculpture waits \u2014 <em>The Sailor<\/em>, located outside The Dolphin pub on Southside Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, we\u2019d completed the full Beryl Cook trail across the city centre and waterfront. It ties everything together \u2014 the humour, the people, and the everyday scenes you\u2019ve just walked through in real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drake\u2019s Place Reservoir: a hidden green surprise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After the exhibition, we continued the circular route north towards somewhere we\u2019d wanted to visit for a while \u2014 <strong>Drake\u2019s Place Reservoir<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a bit of a hidden gem tucked just above the city centre. Calm, green, and surprisingly peaceful considering how close you are to the busy streets below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-drakes-place-reservoir.webp\" alt=\"Drake\u2019s Place Reservoir green space in Plymouth city centre circular walk route\" class=\"wp-image-435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-drakes-place-reservoir.webp 1000w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-drakes-place-reservoir-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-drakes-place-reservoir-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.devonlink.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/plymouth-circular-walk-drakes-place-reservoir-405x270.webp 405w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Drake\u2019s Place Reservoir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, we looped back down through <strong>Queen Anne Terrace<\/strong> and rejoined the city centre near Drake Circus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finishing the loop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To complete the circular walk, we passed back through <strong>Cornwall Street<\/strong>, bringing us full circle to where we started outside Plymouth Market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A proper loop through the city \u2014 waterfront, culture, history, green space, and a bit of fish &amp; chips temptation thrown in for good measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Plymouth really surprised us on this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beryl Cook sculptures make it feel like the city is telling its own story as you walk through it \u2014 slightly cheeky, full of character, and very much rooted in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And The Box exhibition adds real depth if you want to understand the inspiration behind it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll definitely be back to explore more \u2014 and maybe next time Exeter will have to come up with something equally convincing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking of doing this walk, we\u2019d highly recommend it as a full day out.
