Seaton was once a major port, but by the 16th century the estuary had filled up with pebbles. Today Seaton stands as the last of Devon's built up areas on the coastline before arriving in the county of Dorset. The disused railway track in Seaton has been used to create the Seaton Tramway that runs between Seaton and Colyton taking in the Axe valley along the way.

Although Seaton does not have the prim Regency prettiness of Sidmouth and Lyme Regis (its neighbours to the west and east) it has its own charm. Its level walk along the beach is popular with tourists and locals alike. There is a pretty harbour at Axmouth and a relatively easy walk, with spectacular views, over the cliffs to the neighbouring village of Beer. The tramway is visited by thousands of holidaymakers each year. E.S. Semple of Seaton, Devon
