Tour of Britain 2016 Cycle Race Coming to Devon

The Tour of Britain to return to Devon with summit finish

The Tour of Britain will return to Devon after a year’s absence this September. Stage Six will see the world’s top teams and riders racing from Sidmouth on the East Devon coast to the summit of Haytor on Dartmoor.

Tour of Britain Cycle RaceDartmoor hosts the only summit finish of the 2016 edition of British Cycling’s premier road cycling event on Friday 9th September.

In total the route is 152.7km long, including 3,101metres of climbs.

It was announced that the county will be holding the Devon route that will take in Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Honiton, Willand, Tiverton, Crediton, Moretonhampstead, Haldon Forest, and Chudleigh before climbing from Bovey Tracey to this summit finish of The Tour.

In 2013 the Devon stage, on the race’s 10th anniversary event, was so successful 250,000 spectators turned out and generated almost £5.9m of additional spending in the county.

It will be the ninth time in ten years the Tour has visited Devon with the county hosting starts and finishes of Britain’s biggest cycle race annually between 2009 and 2014. Over the past eight Devon stages around 1.25million people have watched the race in Devon along the various Stage routes around the country and it has brought in around £33m to the local economy.

For the fifth successive year fans can look forward to enjoying daily live coverage of all eight stages on ITV4, with the channel broadcasting a three-hour live programme from each stage, plus one-hour of highlights every evening during the race.

Chain Reaction Cycles continue their partnership with the race and sponsorship of the Chain Reaction Cycles Points Classification, won in 2015 by Team WIGGIN’s Owain Doull, while UK parcel carrier Yodel will continue to sponsor the daily intermediate YodelDirect Sprints classification, which Peter Williams of ONE Pro Cycling won last September.

ŠKODA remain official car suppliers and sponsors of the King of the Mountains jersey, also won by Williams in 2015.

The Tour of Britain is British Cycling’s premier road cycling event giving cycling fans the opportunity to see the world’s best teams and riders competing on their door step.
